Overview

Flush structural beams added, warm wood details, and carefully aligned interior and exterior finishes helped modernize the home while letting its overall character remain intact.

Challenges

  • Closed-off kitchen, dining, and living spaces
  • Flat roof structure requiring flush beam installation
  • Limited water pressure and plumbing capacity
  • Tight layout constraints around the primary suite and family room

Key Decisions

  • Installed flush structural beams to fully open the main living spaces
  • Added maple slat walls, shelving, and warm wood details in the main living space for a warm balance
  • Preserved the large rear family room while carefully expanding primary closet space into it
  • Used matching interior and exterior finishes to visually connect the home’s architecture
  • Replaced aging cast iron water lines to improve overall water pressure

Result

The renovation created a more open and functional home while balancing modern updates with the original architectural simplicity of the design.
